“Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” Luke 15:6

Being lost doesn’t mean we have stopped mattering to God. It means that we need the Shepherd who knows us, seeks us, and brings us home. The heart of this parable is God’s joy in recovering someone he loves.

Jesus tells this story after religious leaders complain that he welcomes sinners and eats with them. His answer reveals why he welcomes them: bringing people back into communion with God is central to his mission. The shepherd searches, carries the sheep home, and invites others to celebrate. Jesus connects that joy with a sinner’s repentance.

Ron Rolheiser notes that our restless search for fulfillment can be an unrecognized search for God. Becoming lost may mean being captured by possessions, pleasure, achievement, or approval to satisfy our deepest hunger. Returning begins as we bring that hunger honestly to God.

Many feel lost in life as they feel unloved. Henri Nouwen writes that a very human condition is failing to accept God’s love, as our lives often center on being overlooked or rejected by others.

Sometimes we wander through deliberate choices. At other times, suffering leaves us feeling disoriented. We need to distinguish these experiences: feeling far from God does not necessarily mean we have turned away from him.

We may recognize ourselves in several experiences: lost in the world’s distractions; lost in our own self-sufficiency; lost in wayward ways that can take us away from communion with God; lost in shame and resentment; lost in suffering.

Getting back into communion with God means sharing life with God: receiving his love and allowing that love to shape our choices and relationships. Our return begins with grace. Even the desire to come home can respond to God already drawing us back.

We must remain open to repentance and forgiveness, and to facing what is causing this detachment and sense of distance from the One who seeks us. Returning begins when we bring whatever separates us from Him and honestly recognize it before Him.
