Every Christian eventually encounters the question beneath Paul’s words: Is the Resurrection truly real, or is it merely a comforting religious story?
Some members of the Christian community at Corinth apparently denied that the dead would be raised. Paul responds by reminding them of the Gospel he had received.
His reasoning is direct: if resurrection is impossible, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, the apostolic proclamation is false, sin and death remain undefeated, and Christian faith has no saving foundation.
The Resurrection confirms that Jesus is truly the Son of God and that his sacrificial death has conquered sin. It reveals that death does not possess the final word over humanity. The Cross and Resurrection therefore cannot be separated: the Cross reveals the depth of divine love, while the Resurrection reveals the victory of that love.
Without the Resurrection, the Cross would appear to be only the tragic death of an innocent man. Because Christ has been raised, the Cross becomes the saving passage through which death is transformed into life.
Paul’s words ask us to examine whether the Resurrection truly stands at the center of our lives. It is possible to profess belief in the Resurrection while continuing to live as though failure, suffering, sin, or death has the final word.
