Jesus begins his public ministry with an announcement: the long-awaited moment has arrived, and God’s Kingdom has drawn near. God is not distant, indifferent, or waiting for humanity to find its own way back. In Jesus Christ, God has entered our history and come searching for us.
The Kingdom of God is the active reign of God’s mercy, truth, justice, and love. It becomes present wherever the lost are welcomed, sinners are forgiven, the wounded are healed, and human hearts surrender themselves to God. Jesus not only announces this Kingdom; he embodies it.
Because God has drawn near, Jesus calls us to repent. Repentance is more than feeling sorry. It is a reorientation of life and turning away from everything that separates us from God by turning toward the life he offers. Repentance therefore means allowing the pattern of Christ’s dying and rising to become the pattern of our lives. Something within us must die: our pride, resentment, fear, selfishness, or need for control, so that the life of Christ may rise within us.
To believe in the Gospel is not merely to accept facts about Jesus. It is to entrust ourselves to him. Genuine belief changes how we forgive, serve, suffer, make decisions, and love. Repentance turns us away from the false centers of our lives; faith turns us toward Christ.
