Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside? Luke 11:40

Jesus’ sharp words, “You fools,” call us to wake up. How can someone carefully attend to what others see while neglecting what God sees? Our thoughts, desires, and motives matter because they shape how we treat people.

We can recognize this struggle in ourselves. We may speak kindly in public but harshly at home. We may pray for forgiveness while refusing to forgive someone else. We may help another person mainly to be praised. Even good actions can invite us to examine what is moving us within.

This does not mean that we must have perfect motives before doing something good. We often begin with mixed motives. We can still choose kindness while asking God to deepen our love.

Jesus also gives his listeners a concrete way forward: generosity toward those in need. He then calls attention to justice and love for God, while affirming that other religious duties still matter. Inner renewal must find expression in how we live.

This passage invites an honest examination of our worship and daily conduct. God already knows what we carry within: love and fear, generosity and resentment, faith and doubt. We can bring all of it to him. His grace helps us become people whose outward kindness grows from an inward love.
