“Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Luke 11:28

Jesus is speaking when a woman calls out to praise his mother. Jesus responds by pointing to a blessing open to everyone: hearing God’s word and living by it. His words invite us to become people whose relationship with God shapes their choices.

So how are we blessed? We are blessed because God draws us into a deeper relationship with himself. When we listen and respond, his love begins to shape how we think, speak, and act.

“Blessed” does not mean that everything becomes easy or that obedience earns us a trouble-free life. It means sharing in the goodness and life God offers. His word helps us recognize that we are loved, face what needs to change, and learn how to love others.

Think of hearing Jesus teach us to forgive. We can admire that teaching and still hold tightly to resentment. But when we ask for his help and begin to forgive, his teaching takes root in us. Healing may take time, but we begin to experience the freedom of letting mercy guide our response.

The blessing is both the closeness we experience with God and the change his grace brings about within us. Pope Francis describes God’s word as nourishing and strengthening Christians so they can live the Gospel in daily life.

Lastly, how do we “observe it”? To observe God’s word means to take it to heart and live it—to let God’s love shape our everyday choices.

Jesus asks us to do more than hear his teaching or agree that it is good. He invites us to respond:

– When he teaches love, we show kindness.
– When he teaches forgiveness, we begin working toward forgiving.
– When he teaches mercy, we help someone in need.
– When he teaches honesty, we tell the truth—even when it is difficult.

This does not mean we must immediately do everything perfectly. It means sincerely trying to follow Jesus, asking for his help, and returning to him when we fail.
