“Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:51

Nathanael approaches Jesus with questions. Philip has identified Jesus as the one anticipated by Moses and the prophets, but Nathanael struggles to imagine that such a person could come from Nazareth. Then Jesus reveals that he already knows him. Nathanael responds with faith, recognizing Jesus as the Son of God and King of Israel.

Jesus invites him to discover still more. The promise of heaven opened reaches beyond this first encounter: the Greek “you” is plural, extending the invitation to the disciples. Their journey with Jesus will reveal the relationship between heaven and earth.

Here is a beginning familiar to many believers. We approach Christ with a mixture of hope, uncertainty, and inherited expectations. Faith grows as we allow the person we encounter to deepen our understanding of God.

We can read the promise to Nathanael in the light of the Paschal Mystery. The disciples will discover God’s love through the Son who gives himself for the world. Communion with God comes through Christ’s saving action.

This matters when suffering makes heaven seem closed. The crucified Jesus enters the places where we experience abandonment, fear, and death. His Resurrection gives us grounds to trust that these experiences cannot exhaust what God intends for us. The way into the Father’s life passes through the love of the Son.
