The word of God is living and effective, able to discern the reflections and thoughts of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

The Letter to the Hebrews speaks these words while reflecting upon Israel’s journey through the wilderness. God had delivered the people from slavery, made a covenant with them, and promised to lead them into his rest. Yet many heard God’s voice without allowing that voice to change their hearts. They received the words outwardly, but resisted them inwardly.

The written words of Scripture may appear to remain unchanged upon the page, but the God who speaks through them is alive. Through the action of the Holy Spirit, a passage written centuries ago can address the exact circumstances of a person’s life today.

We may read the same passage many times and suddenly hear it differently. The words have not changed, but we have changed. Our circumstances have changed. Our hearts may have become more attentive or perhaps more wounded, fearful, or ready to surrender.

God’s Word discerns the heart by revealing the truth beneath our thoughts. It exposes not only what we are thinking, but why we are thinking it. Yet its purpose is not to humiliate us. God reveals what is hidden because what remains hidden cannot easily be surrendered, healed, or transformed.
